In the bay of Kavala on Wednesday night, a dolphin around two meters long perished in the forceful southerly wind. The dolphin as a result washed up on Nea Karvali beach, which is east of Kavala.
According to Proto Thema, local amateur fishers discovered the sad creature dead and promptly notified the port administration and the Fisheries Research Institute (IN.ALE), which has its headquarters in Nea Peramos in the municipality of Pangaia.
When told about the occurrence, Aris Christidis, a technologist and agronomist at the Fisheries Research Institute who is in charge of cetacean species, emphasized that the dolphin was an adult male bottlenose dolphin who washed ashore on Wednesday.
As he previously stated, these animals do not frequent the beaches and instead inhabit the larger portion of the sea bay of Kavala, particularly the area behind Thassos.
Because they feed in the deep, they are not caught in nets. So they have no motive to use the internet, he emphasizes.
Christidis emphasized, “I could rule out this cause of death which is frequent for other cetaceans.”
“These creatures are susceptible to contagious diseases among themselves and reside in vast herds, which may number over 100 individuals, far from the coast, in clear (oligotrophic) waters. Perhaps this is what caused the death. Evidently, the sick animal grew weary.”
The poor animal was collected and disposed of this morning by the Kavala municipality’s competent service.
