Tenders for at least four geothermal exploration areas in various regions of northern Greece are expected.

Tenders for the exploration and exploitation of four geothermal areas in different regions of Northern Greece are expected to be issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

These are the areas in question:

  • the Nestos Delta (Chrysoupolis-Eratinou, Keramotis, and Kavala Bay);
  • the Evros Delta (between Alexandroupolis and the Evros River);
  • the Strymon Basin’s central and southern parts;
  • the Acropotamos area in Kavala.

The Sperchios site, a fifth area, is still being considered for inclusion in the tender. Some of these sites were previously put up for auction in 2011, but no contracts were signed due to claims that exceeded the scope of the subsequent notice’s terms.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy introduced new geothermal licensing terms in early 2022, providing a new transparent framework for the utilization of Greece’s geothermal potential.

The Ministerial Decision applies to fields with temperatures above 90 degrees Celsius (medium and high enthalpy), where geothermal potential is primarily used to generate fixed-base electricity.
