The Board of Directors of the Union of Doctors ESY Kavala issued an announcement in which it unequivocally condemns the attack received on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, by a fellow doctor and nurses of the General Hospital of Kavala by a patient’s companion.

With their statement, the hospital doctors of Kavala request “the exemplary punishment of the attacker by the Justice” and make it clear that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.

The full text of the EGESYK announcement follows.

“The Board of Directors of EGESYK condemns today’s attack on a Doctor and Nurses, which was carried out by a patient’s companion in a clinic of our Hospital and we ask for the exemplary punishment of the attacker by the Justice.

It must finally be made clear to anyone who considers Doctors and Nurses to be punching bags and believes that they have the right to threaten them and take legal action against them, that they will suffer the consequences of the law immediately.

It must finally become clear to the Ministry how it must protect the Healthcare workers from such attacks with even stricter penalties and enhanced guarding of the Hospital premises.

The fact that we struggle every day to keep our Hospital standing, underpaid, with miserable hours, at the expense of our mental and physical health does not mean that we are unworthy to tolerate attacks against us without seeking the protection of the Law.

We invite those of our fellow citizens who are interested in improving the situation in the Hospital and not in how they will insult and abuse, to join us in the struggle we are doing to staff the Hospital with the necessary Medical and Nursing staff. Violence will not correct wrongs. Violence is impermissible.”
