A doctor who reportedly served as a general practitioner in a northern Greek hospital for 17 years has left the job when it was discovered he was unqualified.

Local media report that the unidentified doctor in Kavala left when all staff were required to submit their medical diplomas.

The 66-year-old initially claimed to have had a medical diploma from Naples, Italy but checks later found this to be false.

The case came to light when the decision to dismiss the individual was published in the local Official Gazette.

While it is unclear what will happen to the salaries and pension contributions made during the fake doctor’s tenure, it has left the medical authorities with a serious case to answer.
