Earlier this evening, a 35-year-old Bulgarian was arrested by officials from the Kavala Central Port Authority and transferred to the Kavala District Court, where he was accused with insulting national symbols. He was, however, released a short time afterwards.
According to the Central Port Authority of Kavala and eyewitnesses, the 35-year-old Bulgarian approached the dock of the “Apostolos Pavlos” passenger port on Friday night and, after surrendering to the waving Greek flag, raised the Bulgarian flag.
Eyewitnesses alerted port authorities, who raced to the scene and attempted to arrest the 35-year-old guy, who resisted arrest, insulted port guards, and yelled that these areas belonged to Bulgaria. He was escorted to the Kavala First Instance Prosecutor’s Office with the case filed against him.
The arrestee had previously been involved in a similar incident. He is alleged to be a member of an extremist group that believes Kavala and the regions of eastern Macedonia belong to Bulgaria rather than Greece.
